Edo Queens have received a major morale boost after qualifying for the Nigeria Women Football League Super Six, with Godwin Obaseki approving a ₦5 million reward for the team.

The announcement was delivered during a reception organised by the Edo State Government to celebrate the club’s strong finish in the regular NWFL season. Representing the governor at the event, Edo First Lady Betsy Obaseki praised the players and technical crew for what she described as an outstanding campaign.

She urged the team to maintain their momentum and fight for the league title during the Super Six playoffs.

Betsy Obaseki Calls for League Glory

Speaking before players and officials, Mrs Obaseki said Edo Queens had grown into one of Nigeria’s most recognisable women’s football clubs. According to her, the government remains committed to supporting sports development and youth empowerment across the state.

She said the administration viewed the team’s qualification as more than just a sporting achievement, adding that it reflected years of investment in sports infrastructure and talent development.

The First Lady also linked the club’s rise to initiatives such as the Betsy Obaseki Women Football Tournament, which has helped promote women’s football in Nigeria.

“Go out there and win the trophy,” she told the players, while encouraging them to secure a continental ticket for Edo State.

₦5m Reward Announced for Edo Queens

As part of the celebration, the governor approved a ₦5 million cash reward for the squad. Officials said the money was intended to motivate the players ahead of the decisive Super Six competition.

Women’s football in Nigeria has continued to attract wider attention in recent years, with clubs increasingly benefiting from state investment and private sponsorship. Edo Queens’ recent performances have strengthened the club’s status as one of the leading sides in the NWFL.

Sports Commission Chairman Praises Government Support

Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Yussuf Alli, commended the state government for its continued backing of sports programmes.

He described sports administration as financially demanding but essential for youth development and talent discovery. Alli also assured supporters that Edo Queens would give their best during the Super Six tournament.

According to him, the support from the governor and the First Lady had helped improve sports development in the state.

Deputy Governor Promises More Support

Edo Deputy Governor Godwin Omobayo also pledged continued support for Edo Queens and Bendel Insurance FC.

He urged both clubs to represent the state positively and noted that Edo athletes had continued to excel in different sporting competitions nationally and internationally.

The deputy governor added that the administration would continue to support policies designed to strengthen the sports sector.

Edo Queens’ qualification for the Super Six places the club among the top contenders for the NWFL title. The competition will determine Nigeria’s league champions and the country’s representatives in continental women’s football.
