Edo Queens Reach NWFL Super Six Playoffs

Edo Queens have booked their place in the Nigeria Women Football League Super Six playoffs after holding defending champions Delta Queens to a tense 1-1 draw in Asaba.

The result, secured at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Delta State, confirmed the Benin-based side as one of the top teams advancing from Group B of the NWFL Premiership.

Officials in Edo State described the qualification as a reward for months of investment and support from the state government, which owns and sponsors the club.

Betsy Obaseki to Host Edo Queens in Benin

Following the qualification, Betsy Obaseki congratulated the team and announced plans to receive the players upon their return to Benin City.

According to the Edo State Sports Commission, the reception will take place at 2pm inside the Festival Hall of Government House on Friday.

The chairman of the commission, Yussuf Alli, said both Governor Godwin Obaseki and the First Lady were delighted by the achievement.

Alli praised the resilience shown by the players during the campaign and said the team justified the government’s continued backing of women’s football in the state.

“Our girls made it despite the pressure and expectations,” Alli said. “The Governor and the First Lady are proud of the team’s achievement and look forward to welcoming them back home.”

Late Drama in Asaba

The decisive fixture remained deadlocked for most of the encounter before forward Odoma Amarachi finally broke the tension in the 84th minute with a crucial goal for Edo Queens.

Her strike briefly appeared to hand the visitors all three points before Delta Queens responded with a late equaliser in the closing stages of the game.

Despite conceding late, Edo Queens held on to the draw they needed to secure qualification for the Super Six championship playoffs.

The Benin club ended the regular season with 23 points, recording seven wins, two draws and five defeats to finish second in Group B behind Bayelsa Queens.

What Super Six Qualification Means

The NWFL Super Six is the final championship stage of Nigeria’s top-flight women’s league. The competition determines the national champions and also decides which club earns qualification for continental football.

For Edo Queens, qualification represents a major milestone in a season marked by inconsistency, pressure and fierce competition within Group B.

Women’s football in Nigeria has continued to attract increased state investment in recent years, with clubs such as Edo Queens and Bayelsa Queens benefiting from government-backed funding and improved player welfare programmes.
